<\/p>\nAccording to competing experts determining to litigate parent company Meta, around 44 million UK Facebook users are expected to share \u00a32.3bndamage.<\/p>\n
Dr. Liza Lovdahl Gormsen claims Meta “ill-treated its market dominance” to set an “unfair price” for free of cost exploit of Facebook – UK users’ data.<\/p>\n
She proposes to carry the case to the Competition Appeal Tribunal.<\/p>\n
Users had “meaningful control” of what information they shared, A Meta representative said.<\/p>\n
‘Excessive profits’<\/p>\n
Dr. Lovdahl Gormsen says, \u201cFacebook abused its market dominance to impose unfair terms and conditions on ordinary Britons, giving it the power to exploit their data”<\/p>\n
The data taken between the time frame 2015 and 2019, offered an extremely comprehensive image of their internet use, serving the company to create “excessive profits”.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnyone living in the UK who used Facebook at least once during the period will be part of the claim unless they choose to opt-out\u201d, she says.<\/p>\n
In November, the UK’s Supreme Court discarded a statement claiming to be in search of billions of pounds in damages from Google for suspected illegal tracking of millions of iPhones.<\/p>\n

In that case, the judge said that the applicant had failed to prove the cause of damage was data collection to each individual. But the possibility of future mass action cases was not ruled out in case damages occur in a calculated way.<\/p>\n
And Dr. Lovdahl Gormsen said: “discarded cases are particularly allowable at the Competition Appeal Tribunal.<\/p>\n
“As a result, my case can claim damages on behalf of the 44 million British Facebook users affected.”<\/p>\n
Meta has discarded the allegations.<\/p>\n
Users prefer using its free services because it\u2019s useful for users and has control over the way data is used, it says.<\/p>\n
‘Deliver value’<\/p>\n
A representative said: “People access our service for free.<\/p>\n
“They choose our services because we deliver value for them and they have meaningful control of what information they share on Meta’s platforms and with.<\/p>\n
“We have invested heavily to create tools that allow them to do so.”<\/p>\n
Though this specific Meta faces a billion-pound class-action case is the new addition to Meta\u2019s legal battles.<\/p>\n
It was certain it would overcome in court, Meta said<\/p>\n
